HRC’s campaigns are focused on mobilizing those who envision a world strengthened by diversity, where our laws and society treat all people equally, including LGBTQ+ people and those who are multiply marginalized.
In addition to educating the public about the issues that affect LGBTQ+ people and their families, HRC Columbus works to engage LGBTQ+ people and allies in the fight for equality, raise money to fund HRC’s work, build strong relationships with local businesses and like-minded organizations, and turn out voters to elect pro-Equality candidates into office. Members of the HRC Columbus Steering Committee serve as co-chairs of different program committees and bring their skills and talents to the work. Each program focuses on different aspects of HRC’s work in the community, such as fundraising, community engagement, expanding membership, volunteer recruitment, and political action.
Each year HRC Columbus hosts a gala dinner at the Ohio Union to bring the community together and raise funds to support HRC's mission. More than 600 guests join us for this signature event, which features prominent speakers and entertainers. A team of volunteers plans the program, enlists corporate sponsors, recruits table captains, and prepares the silent auction.
Volunteers from around Central Ohio work to improve the lives of LGBTQ Ohioans through political action. We work with our state advocacy partners to lobby for pro-LGBTQ legislation and against anti-LGBTQ legislation. We also work to mobilize pro-equality voters and elect political leaders who support the LGBTQ community. Making phone calls for candidates, canvassing neighborhoods, writing letters to elected officials, and dropping off yard signs - we do all that and more.
Our Community Engagement team works with organizations throughout Central Ohio to help build ties between organizations and provide support. We currently our focusing our efforts in four areas: (1) traditional LGBTQ organizations (groups led by LGBTQ people for LGBTQ people, (2) the faith community, (3) K-12 and higher education, and (4) the corporate community.
Our Federal Club team works to build a community among HRC's donors. Federal Club membership starts at $100 per month and includes discounts to our annual dinner and special invitations to events throughout the year.
Our Membership Outreach team works to bring in new members to HRC and to show appreciation for our current members. You will find us at Columbus Pride furiously working at the HRC booth to sell T-shirts and other merchandise (come say hi!). This committee also attends other Prides throughout Ohio and plans events during the rest of the year, such as our annual bowling event in November.
